A first floor flat on a main road within a terraced red brick mansion block originally built for the workers of the Battersea power station.

The concept was to reverse the existing layout by moving the bedrooms away from the main road towards the rear, and to create a light spacious open plan living space at the front; minimising the circulation corridors and maximising a sense of space as you entered the flat.

The low quality original construction and the fact that there were adjoining flats on all four sides made structural alterations difficult.

The project took four months from start to finish and cost £40,000.

Existing walls needed reinforcing to accommodate new steel beams and existing structure needed careful propping to create smooth load transfers onto the new structure.  Ceilings needed additional sound proofing to allow for the new layout.
